Snapshots from the Culture Club’s Art Remixed workshop at the Hyperlink Festival, Tate Modern, April 26th
Last month, The Culture Club Photography Workshops had the honour of being chosen to run workshops during the Hyperlink Festival, a weekend -long event curated by Tate Collective for young people aged 15–25. We took the theme of “six degrees of separation”, and developed a two-hour session that featured colourful brainstorming, mysterious boxes and props inspired by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein and John Singleton Copley to create “art-inspired” photography. Check out some of our snaps below!
Hot shots: London Marathon 2013
Yesterday, I went to Mile 21 along the London Marathon course to shoot my running crew Run Dem Crew. I brought along two cameras – my Canon 5D (with a 50mm, 1.8 lens) I recently bought second-hand and an entry level Canon 1100D (with a 18-55mm, 3.5-5.6 lens,) as I wanted the option to switch between wide angle and more telephoto shooting. But I hardly used the 1100D in the end – the lighting was tricky with alot of shadowy areas – at one point I even used fill flash – but it didn’t get me the results I wanted.
In terms of settings, I worked in Aperture Priority most of the time, but used the exposure compensation button alot, as I didn’t want the stress of working in Manual Mode. And, as is the case with outdoor photography, the light kept changing, but I wanted to keep my aperture as large as possible without overexposing the final results so I can get that really shallow Depth of Field I like to have in my pics. Finally, I converted the pics to black and white as I really wanted to communicate the story of the day, without the distraction of colour. I think it worked

NEWS: The Culture Club heads to Tate Modern for Hyperlink Festival
Over the past month and a bit, we’ve been working tirelessly on a project that’s been hush-hush until now; we’ll be running photography workshops for schools at the Tate Modern’s Hyperlink Festival on April 26th! Hyperlink is a free festival of music, art and fashion for young people, curated by Tate Collective. It’s the first in a series of national festivals being developed as part of Circuit, a new national youth network for the visual arts.
We’ve created a fun and interactive workshop inspired by some of Tate’s collections (including the Roy Lichtenstein show), so check out our pics of us getting prepared just below!
Our workshops will be for schools only, but there are public events running on April 27 and 28th – for more info, visit: http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tanks-tate-modern/eventseries/hyperlink

Snapshots from the Easter break photography workshops for teens, April 8th
We had an absolute blast at our latest photography workshop for teens, which we ran during the second week of the Easter holiday. Seven teenagers aged 13-15 got to grips with techniques for improving their photos – and all enjoyed the challenge at the end, which featured prizes for three winners!
Our next holiday workshop for teens will be taking place during the May half-term. For more info, scroll to the bottom of the page to join our mailing list!
Snapshots from the half-term photography workshop for teens, February 20th
We were fortunate the cold frost held off long enough for us to put on our first half-term photography workshop for teens on February 20th! Four young women, aged 14-16, came along to learn how to take better pictures around the Hackney area – and it was a fantastic day! Here’s feedback from one parent:
“A very big thank you for the workshop yesterday, Hudi returned so full of enthusiasm, full of anecdotes and brimming with her new knowledge. She talked to us all so much about the course, about you, about her great day! You even fixed the weather, bright and cold but no rain, I think you should take the credit for that too. Please stay in touch about future workshops!”

Hot shots: Matt Burden
These fantastic snaps dropped into our inbox last night from former street photography workshop attendee Matt Burden. He took the pics during our January 20th class and we love them for the creative use of colour and they way the street art adds to the narrative of the pictures – great work Matt!
Our next Street Photography Workshop takes place on March 17th around Shoreditch. Click HERE for more info.

Snapshots from the 4-week beginners course (January)
2013 has got off to a great start for The Culture Club – two 4-week beginners photography courses started last Saturday (January 5th), helping 20 new camera owners and aspiring photographers understand the basics of digital photography. To ensure they get the most out of the month, attendees are given weekly assessed challenges which focus on a particular area of photography – and they’ll receive a manual photography guide and certificate of completion at the end!
Our 4-week beginners courses are fully booked until May. Click HERE for more info and to secure your place.
Snaps from the 4-week beginners course (November)
Our new 4-week beginners course wrapped up last weekend! It gave budding photographers and new camera owners a chance to get to grips with the basics at a steadier pace and see their photography improve with weekly assignments and regular feedback.
Our next beginners course takes place on January 5th, 2013. Click HERE for more info and to secure your place.
