Snapshots from the Culture Club’s Art Remixed workshop at the Hyperlink Festival, Tate Modern, April 26th
Last month, The Culture Club Photography Workshops had the honour of being chosen to run workshops during the Hyperlink Festival, a weekend -long event curated by Tate Collective for young people aged 15–25. We took the theme of “six degrees of separation”, and developed a two-hour session that featured colourful brainstorming, mysterious boxes and props inspired by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein and John Singleton Copley to create “art-inspired” photography. Check out some of our snaps below!

NEWS: The Culture Club heads to Tate Modern for Hyperlink Festival
Over the past month and a bit, we’ve been working tirelessly on a project that’s been hush-hush until now; we’ll be running photography workshops for schools at the Tate Modern’s Hyperlink Festival on April 26th! Hyperlink is a free festival of music, art and fashion for young people, curated by Tate Collective. It’s the first in a series of national festivals being developed as part of Circuit, a new national youth network for the visual arts.
We’ve created a fun and interactive workshop inspired by some of Tate’s collections (including the Roy Lichtenstein show), so check out our pics of us getting prepared just below!
Our workshops will be for schools only, but there are public events running on April 27 and 28th – for more info, visit: http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tanks-tate-modern/eventseries/hyperlink

Snapshots from the half-term photography workshop for teens, February 20th
We were fortunate the cold frost held off long enough for us to put on our first half-term photography workshop for teens on February 20th! Four young women, aged 14-16, came along to learn how to take better pictures around the Hackney area – and it was a fantastic day! Here’s feedback from one parent:
“A very big thank you for the workshop yesterday, Hudi returned so full of enthusiasm, full of anecdotes and brimming with her new knowledge. She talked to us all so much about the course, about you, about her great day! You even fixed the weather, bright and cold but no rain, I think you should take the credit for that too. Please stay in touch about future workshops!”
Our next holiday workshop for teens will be taking place during the Easter break. For more info, join our mailing list below!

Snapshots from the Beginners Level 2/Intermediate Photowalk and Workshop – Spitalfields (March 24th)
Tutor Hannah Guy led our first intermediate photowalk and workshop last Saturday (March 24th), around the Spitalfields area – and it was lovely day for shooting! Our walk took us along Commercial Street (past the Jack the Ripper pub), Brick Lane and eventually up to Broadgate, giving attendees a chance to:
- Get an introduction to street and architectural photography
- Improve on their basic knowledge of photography, while learning more advanced approaches to using their cameras
- Understand how to “read light” and the difference between metering modes
- Make the most of their flash in daylight
- Understand white balance, and set it accordingly
- Learn more advanced composition techniques to make the most out of subjects and locations
- Understand how to develop their own “style” of photography
Keith (the lovely fella in the green top and glasses above), who attended one of our night photography workshops, said: “This is the second Culture Club workshop I have attended. Hannah is very knowledgeable – I came away understanding a lot more about my camera and of course, methods and techniques. Highly recommended.” Andrew (next to Keith in pic 4), added: “The workshop was great. It took what I learned at the previous one and built upon it, going beyond shutter speed and aperture to metering and exposure, things which I hadn’t even considered in the past. I’d highly recommend.”
Beginners Level 1 tutor Shan Rixon also came along (and you can check out her snaps here…)
Our next workshop is scheduled for April 22nd and is now called “Beginners Level 2” – so if you’re a new photographer who can now use manual mode, or an intermediate level photographer who wants to develop your skills further, click here to secure your place.
